We love tap dancing. The joy we experience from the combination of dance and music is something we want to share!
Throughout the year, the VanTap family gathers to celebrate some of the most influential tap dancers of recent history including Jimmy Slyde, Gregory Hines, and Uncle Bo (Bill Bojangles Robinson), as well as our local and global tap dance community.
Hosted by Andrew Nemr, these gatherings are modeled after the tap jams of the early 1990s in New York City at such places as La Cav, La Plac on the Park, and Showmans, as well as the open floors of Gregory Hines’ one-man shows. A mentor to Nemr and lover of community, Hines was once quoted as saying, “The minute you lace up your first pair of tap shoes, you’re in.” And so we gather…
- To celebrate the journey of every dancer in our community, from those just starting, to those pushing the limits.
- To remember the immense contribution of these influential tap dancers gave to our form.
- To celebrate the vibrancy of our current community of dancers, musicians, and organizers.
It is thanks in large part to the contributions of these dancers and the strength of our community that tap dance is as vibrant as it is today. The Celebrate! Series is just one way VanTap is working to keep it that way.
